The installation method I chose was to create a bootable installer and I set up the installer on 32gb USB drive (formatted per the instructions). The optical drive has been removed and replaced with a 1TB HDD via an optical bay enclosure (which I do not use anymore, mostly because I have no need for it, but also because I do not trust it and the iMac seems to run better with it unmounted).
